Another great month with 56 votes, equaling the second highest turnout ever. It was a remarkable busy month on the Forum with well over 1100 posts, and over 200 nominations. Work is advancing on the separation of the Rude Category. We have come up with a compromise that I think will satisfy everyone, but I will not elaborate at the moment. Thank you to everyone who offered their opinion. |
This category had an unusual start. After 20 votes, Rick was leading comfortably and he seemed to have a good chance. However, 5 votes later, he was in 5th place and Horrid Stretchy Pus, jumped from 5th to the lead. Once in the lead, he never relinquished it, winning by 12 points. We had planned to ask him to move his anagram to Rude, but time did not allow this move before the start of the competition. The competition for the minor places was quite intense, with Adrian, Toby and Chris Doyle all being in contention and a quick finish from myself. This was "Horrid's" first award. He has been very active on the Forum and it was just a matter of time before he would pick one up. This was Toby's 13th award and Adrian's 52th. Adrian had confided in me that his winning streak would end this month. It is nice to see that he was wrong. |
1 | Horrid Stretchy Pus |
47 | Week ashore = Seek a whore! |
2 | Toby Gottfried |
35 | Enemy combatant = Cannot be my team! |
2 | Adrian Hickford |
35 | Eyes naturally show ~ she really wants you. |
4 | Larry Brash |
31 | Manila folders = filed as normal. |
5 | Chris Doyle |
29 | The lunatic fringes = Left/right nuisance. |
This was an exciting category. Chris Doyle led out from Richard Grantham and Hans-Peter after 20 votes, but JB jumped into the lead 5 votes later. She battled it out with Hans-Peter, but finished strongly for a well-deserved win. JB now has 56 awards and shares 4th place. |
1 | JB |
50 | The new SPIDERMAN movie = Made with even MORE spin! |
2 | Hans-Peter Reich |
45 | And now to something completely different... = Python-crew's genial motto often ended film. |
3 | Chris Doyle |
36 | Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" = Hard news -- with a sly jest, too. |
Another very close event. Chris and Adrian were clearly the two main contenters. Adrian opened a five point lead on Day Two, which was trimmed to three points by Day Three. Chris finished well to pass him and get home with just 2 points the difference. This was Chris's third win. |
1 | Chris Doyle |
45 | The former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay is indicted = Nice! "Felony" is the one market he didn't corner. |
2 | Adrian Hickford |
43 | Drugs in athletics = Suicidal strength. |
3 | Horrid Stretchy Pus |
27 | Martha Stewart = "Rats! What a term" |
Yet another close event and one that I watched with great personal interest. Mey had a small lead on Day One and then we were tied at the end of Day Two AND Day Three. When I logged on at the end of voting, I was delighted to find that I had won by just two points. |
1 | Larry Brash |
58 | The actor Marlon Brando = Born to act hard-man role. |
2 | Mey Kraus |
56 | The rider Lance Armstrong of Austin, Texas = So, a man garners sixth 'Tour de France' title! |
3 | JB |
41 | Adm. Horatio Nelson = Oh, and I lost one arm. |
If the preceding three category had been close, then this one broke the pattern. Mey led after 24 hours by eight points, with Toby in second. That lead blew out to 18 points by the end of voting. |
1 | Mey Kraus |
74 | The Microsoft products = Third of computer's cost... |
2 | Toby Gottfried |
56 | The Massachusetts Institute of Technology = They teach a lot of stunts to genius chemists. |
3 | Richard Grantham |
33 | Master of Arts = So smart after. |
I think that this was our largest field (13) ever in this relatively new category. That made it hard for the voters to separate the top six from each other until the final day. Mey, Jesse, David Bourke and myself led on various occasions, but it was Mey who polled very strongly in the last 24 hours for a nice 12 point win. |
1 | Mey Kraus |
49 | The new Bond girl in Lee Tamahori's 'Die Another Day' = |
2 | Larry Brash |
37 | Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Ron Wood and the late Brian Jones = |
3 | Jesse Frankovich |
35 | Apprentice (n.): one bound by indenture to serve another for a prescribed time period, so as to learn an art or trade. = |
The top three had a great competition with all of them leading at one point or another. Mey and David shared a three point lead on Day One, then JB had it on Day Two and Day Three. David powered in to win by four points in a tight finish. 56 wins fro David keeps in shared 4th place with JB. |

2 | Mey Kraus |
66 | (The original show's opening lines, as ... = Shatner... The worst thespian. This fee... |
3 | JB |
60 | Last evening I was sitting at the bottom... = The image of a poetic individual evoked... |
Well, this was a surprise! The voters seem to prefer a cheap shot at Microsoft to two beautifully anagrammed poems. You philistines! :-). At least it was close for first place with us swapping the lead on the first three days, before I opened a small margin, which took me to the line by four points. Richard now has 140 awards to Mey's 169, boosted by three wins this month. |
1 | Larry Brash |
60 | May I take the liberty to introduce myself... |
2 | Richard Grantham |
56 | AUSTRALIA |
3 | Mey Kraus |
49 | If by Rudyard Kipling |
4 | David Bourke |
37 | Posh! (from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang') |
5 | Hans-Peter Reich |
19 | Fermat's Last Theorem... |
I had not made a prediction for this category this month, but I hoped that I might be well placed. I was pleasantly surprised to that I was leading by 10 points after the first day and romped home with a 21 point margin. What I like about this anagram was that I was able to create nine words out of three words, and with the help of some creative punctuation, it turned out to be a nice little anagram. A delightful month for me with three wins, bumping my total to 83. |
1 | Larry Brash |
58 | The Missionary Position = So, I say, it's: "I'm in her, on top". |
2 | Tony Crafter |
37 | So distressing: The pain and misery of ... = My piss is a steamy needle of fire, and... |
3 | Rick |
34 | A licensed brothel = Behold! It's cleaner. |
This was quite a tough decision to make as most of the minor placegetters won awards in other categories. We considered Hans-Peter's second in Entertainment, but there is a minor error in the subject text. We considered Rick's General, which led early on, but it came in 6th, 23 points from the lead. We then looked closely at Jesse's Medium entry which came third, 14 points from the lead and went with that.
