Yet another new record of 56 voters. Three months in a row where the score was over 50. I wondered for a while if we would reach 60. The number of voters was boosted by the regulars from the Washington Post Style Invitational who visited the website to download Anagram Artist for their recent contest. Quite a few of our own regulars took up the Invitational's challenge to find the best topic anagram. We have decided that this month's Awardsmaster's Challenge will be to vote on our entries to the Invitational. More about that later in the month. The 14 awards this month were shared between just six members. It was very much the "Month of Mey" as the results below will show. |
I think most people knew which anagram was the hot favourite before voting started. It was no surprise that Mey opened a good lead on Day One and cruised home with a big lead. The minor places were hotly contested with frequent jostling for position. Day One had palusch 2nd, me and Jesse equal 3rd, and Tony Crafter in contention. Day Two had Jesse, Tony, palusch and I, in 2nd to 5th places. Day Three, Zoran pushed through the pack and moved into 4th, then passed Jesse and Tony on the last day. Zoran's award was his third this year and his 16th all up. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 62 | A Siberian tiger = It is a rare being. |
2 | Zoran | 36 | Religious leaders = I realise God rules. |
3 | Jesse Frankovich | 35 | Computer station meltdown = We lost important document! |
4 | Tony Crafter | 32 | The onset of old age = Fog and loose teeth! |
5 | palusch | 24 | Chase out ~ housecat. |
5 | Larry Brash | 24 | The operating theatre = Go there, treat the pain. |
This was another start-to-finish win to Mey, but the margin was much smaller. Toby came home with a huge burst, moving into second place only seven points behind Mey. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 54 | The impressionist landscape = This sad place inspires Monet. |
2 | Toby Gottfried | 47 | William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon ~ knew Hamlet favors Ophelia as a bride. |
3 | Tony Crafter | 37 | "I am beautiful in every single way" = A lusty, feminine view by Aguilera. |
Yet another win for Mey. Tony Crater was briefly at the top early on Day One, but Mey soon took command and won by a massive 32 points. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 66 | The White House Daily Press Briefing = Hey, I air the lies of president G.W. Bush! |
2 | Tony Crafter | 34 | Sarah Marbeck and Rebecca Loos = Real's Beckham CAN score abroad! |
3 | Scott Gardner | 28 | The Good Friday service sermon ~ goes "O, Christ died for every man". |
Some pundits, including myself, thought that Tony Crafter would win here. He did indeed lead for a while on Day One. However, Mey, in brilliant form, pasted him and kept a modest lead through to the end. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 61 | Her best asset = These breasts! |
2 | Tony Crafter | 56 | Practising homosexuals ~ Climax shooting up arses! |
3 | palusch | 38 | Adult items ~ stimulated. |
This was one of the closer categories this month. View's anagram was obviously popular with the soccer fans and led out at the end of Day One. JB soon commandeered a small lead for the next two days, but it was Jesse who finished brilliantly getting home with a small lead. |
1 | Jesse Frankovich | 52 | William Shakespeare, the Immortal Bard of Avon =... |
2 | View | 48 | Diego Maradona = An arm? Good idea! |
3 | JB | 47 | Will Shakespeare, the Immortal Bard = A past writer, he had memorable skill. |
Another closely contested event with many changes of lead. Jesse, JB, and Toby were never more 10 points apart, and all led at various times. Jesse, again finished well, to pick the Name Double. His three wins this month push his grand total to 23, which puts him in the Top Ten at equal ninth place with the great Mike Keith. |
1 | Jesse Frankovich | 65 | Asian Continent = Ancient nations. |
2 | Toby Gottfried | 62 | Heineken brewery in Amsterdam = A site where many men drink beer. |
3 | JB | 55 | Manchester United Soccer Team = Cute men in red score at matches! |
JB and David were the only two real contenders here. It was close all the way, but David always had his nose in front (sorry, mate!) and won by five points. |
1 | David Bourke | 74 | The RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) =... |
2 | JB | 69 | Museum n: a depository for collecting and displaying objects having scientific or historical or art... |
3 | Larry Brash | 41 | Did you hear about the new kind of simple contraceptive for use in males? =... |
Mey got off to his usual good start, but JB shadowed him all the way and missed an award (yet again), this time by a mere point. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 73 | Ironic by Alanis Morissette... |
2 | JB | 72 | SCIENTISTS' REPLIES to an invitation to a ball... |
3 | Joe Fathallah | 38 | Free!... |
A quieter month in Special, which raises the question about always awarding three prizes here. There will be a poll about this soon. Mey always looked good here, but David never dropped more than eight points behind him. Third palce was close with Adrian just keeping clear of Richard. An aMEYzing again for our champion with six awards and over 90 DFE points! 160 awards all up. Two wins for David consolidate his fifth place with 53 winners. Adrian now has 46 awards. |
1 | Mey Kraus | 87 | A sample from an Astrology site, anagrammed into 12 weekly predictions. |
2 | David Bourke | 79 | A two-dimensional anagram of the Scrabble tiles. |
3 | Adrian Hickford | 52 | "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette. |
4 | Richard Grantham | 48 | An unusual visual anagram. |
There were many potential winners here and the choice was quite hard. We considered several of JB's anagrams (People's and Other Names, and Long), Tony's General, Topical and Rude, Toby's Entertainment and Other Names, and View's People's Names. All worth contenders. We rarely give this award to Rude (especially not as rude as Tony's), nor do we usually select a Long. After much discussion, we chose
