The Anagrammy Awards Results for July 2002

30 voters this month, our biggest since moving to the Forum. The Forum has really turned into a multiracial forum, with representatives from many European and non-European countries. In the past the dominant groups were British, American, and Australian in origin. I have always been amazed by the standard of anagramming in English of people in whom English is not their native tongue.

The number of nominees and voters is slowly, but steadily rising over the last three months since we moved to the Forum. This is pleasing to see and vindicates the move. We may have lost some good anagrammatists who have stayed exclusively in alt.anagrams, but we have gained several new members who are starting to shine and win awards. There has been the return of some old members, two of whom won awards this month.

General Category - 1st three win an award. This month's nominations included quite a number of very short anagrams, which are always highly valued in this category. This month's competition started evenly, but Adrian pulled well clear midway, but two solid days. This contest for third place was intense and the final results was a fair one. Adrian's win was his ninth this year and 20th all up. Joe has had 5 wins in the last 5 months since he has been anagramming. Paul won his second award in his short time here with just 7 letters in his anagram.

Entertainment Category Richard was another who shone on the 2nd and 3rd days of the competition opening a very strong lead. The more cultured style of anagrams did well here this month.

1st Richard Grantham with: Monsieur Camille Saint-Saens = Learns to see animals in music. 38 2nd Jaybur with: Michelangelo Buonarroti's famous 'Pieta' = O, cut marble into shape of a religious man. 23 Eq 3rd Wayne Baisley with: Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter = The television writher-conducer. 20 Eq 3rd  David A. Green with: Kirsten Flagstad, the Norwegian soprano ~ entertains with folksongs, a grand opera.  20

Topical Category As with last month, there was a broad range of topics here this month. This started fairly closely with Allan, Adrian, and Mick (posting under an alias) all in contention in Day One. Allan steadily amassed the votes and kept the others at bay.

Rude Category A good sized field this month, but with only two really standout anagrams here. Mey started brilliantly, and I was surprised how Richard was able to catch up to him, but Mey finished strongly on the last day.

Peoples' Names Category Another race with three main contenders, with Adrian starting strongly. Zoran did not really come into contention until the last two days and finished with 5 of the last 6 primary votes.

1st Zoran Radisavlevic with: The Maid of Orleans = Damsel on a hot fire! 41 2nd Adrian Hickford with: Doctor Harold Frederick Shipman = Horror plan of sick medic - Dr. Death. 32 3rd Meyran Kraus with: Ariel Sharon, Yasser Arafat and George Bush = Sheer Fat-Arse, Aging Arab and Sorry U.S.A-Hole. 27

Other Names Category Lots of good anagrams here, as is becoming the case on a regular basis. This was certainly the closest category this month. Zoran led on the first day, but Mattias did well mid-competition and took the lead. Zoran had a stronger finish and ended up with the Name Double. This two awards were his first for the year and give him a total of 4 awards.

Spam Category Only two in this month, but both were excellent, and this may have deterred others from trying. The first two votes and the last two votes favoured Mey, but the majority in between liked Allan's better. (the punchline was great!) A good month for Allan with two wins. He now has had 10 this year and 14 altogether, moving him to 12th on the All-Time Table.

Long Category This was the another fairly close category this month. Like last month Paul Pan was an early contender, however, my anagram soon took a narrow lead, which was slowly extended. My 9th win this year and 74th since 1998. This anagram had a terrible letter distribution with excess U's, not many T's or H's and just one F.

Special Category - 1st three win an award. So often these days Mey comes up with something great here. Richard's brilliant and highly originally anagrammed flags did well, but Mey's was always the leader. Wayne's famous lists did well and beat two more traditional entries in the Special. Mey had two wins this month, giving a brilliant 25 for the year and 105 since the beginning. Richard G did well with 3 winners (12 for the year and 110 ever) Wayne has won 6 awards over the years.

Awardsmaster's Choice for best non-winning anagram It was easy to pick the winner here this month. I went for one that did lead during the competition, one that was a great anagram with so few letters (just 9, including 2 G's and 3 O's), and one that was created by someone who had not won an award already this month.
