The Anagrammy Awards Results - September, 2006

49 voters was the best turnout for the year and the highest since November 2005.

This month saw the Awards totally dominated by two of the best, Mey Kraus (as usual) and, returning from a break and still in fine form, Richard Grantham. Of the nine categories, they obtained first place in eight of them; Mey with six and Richard with two.

Mey also set a new record for monthly DFE points, with 109.79, just eclipising his old record of 109.21. This was an amazing result, especially as there was no Awardmaster's Challenge to boost the DFE points up. This is the 4th time that anyone has broken the 100 point barrier. Mey did it twice in 2004 and Richard first did it in 2000.

GENERAL:

The first three placegetters were fairly clear by the end of 24 hours, with Mey and Richard jostling for the lead, and with Rick just a short way behind. In the last 24 hours of the competition, the voters strongly favoured Mey, who shot ahead to win by 21 points.

Rick maintained third place with Rosie just never quite able to close the gap. Rick's award was his 6th this year and takes him to 19 all-up.

A desert landscape = Sand-related space!

ENTERTAINMENT:

Mey's anagram here was as close to perfect as I have ever seen. This is what World Class anagramming is all about!

Mey started strongly, leading by 11 points after 12 hours. After two days, he was 32 points clear. Ellie finished strongly to narrow his margin to 18.

1

  Mey Kraus

75

C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" = We enter a world which is behind that closet.

2

  Ellie

57

Salvador Dali's painting: The Persistence of Memory = Portrayed nightmare vision of timeless landscape.

3

  Rick

30

Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" = Passover dinner hides actual plot.

TOPICAL:

A huge win for Mey here.

Mey led by 14 after 12 hours and extended that to nearly 40 points at the end of the event.

1

  Mey Kraus

80

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin Killed By A Stingray = Dying diver will utter his last, ocean-borne "Crikey!"

  Rosie Perera

41

Overheard at school playground: ~ "Ever had any drugs, alcohol or pot?"

3

  Larry Brash

40

His Holiness Pope Benedict the Sixteenth = This speech exhibited no politeness, then?

PEOPLES NAMES:

Nice to see Richard back showing his great anagramming ability.

Richard led consistently by 8-9 points from start to finish.

1

  Richard G

52

The Austrian neurologist, Sigmund Freud = Genius said a fond mother nurtures guilt.

2

  Rosie Perera

44

The cartoonist Matt Groening ~ got attention tracing Homer S.

3

  Tony Crafter

37

The Australian model Elle 'The Body' Macpherson = Tall, shapely, blonde cutie. Ah, most men adore her!

OTHER NAMES:

The Name Double to Richard.

Richard had a better winning margin here than he did in People's Names, winning by a very strong 19 points.

Richard won three awards this month, giving me four for this year, and 157 on the All-Time Table.

1

  Richard G

68

Bush administration = It's bad or it's inhuman.

2

  Rosie Perera

49

The Smart Car = Hamster cart.

3

  Andrew

24

The Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka = Killing for a state has merit?

MEDIUM LENGTH:

As soon as I saw Mey's Medium entry on the Forum, I knew that it was a winner. The Salman Rushdie quip was brilliant just as a stand-alone joke, and twice as good because it was an anagram.

Not surprisingly, Mey took a good early lead and cruised in 27 points ahead.

1

  Mey Kraus

66

Pope Benedict's anti-Islam remarks in that speech have angered the Muslim world =
The Vatican spokesman pledged: "I blame it on the speechwriter, Mr. Salman Rushdie!"

She is barely sixteen, very cute and already a great lay.

3

  Tony Crafter

31

Historical motion pictures: Ben Hur, El Cid, The Agony And The Ecstasy, The Ten Commandments, Khartoum =
In them, hero Charlton 'Chuck' Heston's cast as a tormented guy in period costume hated by militant men!

LONG:

WOW! Someone other than Mey and Richard won here, perhaps because they did not have an entry in this category. I am not meaning to take anything away from Tony's win. It was well-deserved.

Tony took a good 13 point led by the end of Day One. Given such a small field, this is actually a very substantial finishing margin.

1

  Tony Crafter

76

The Worlds shortest Fairy Tale: Once upon a ti... = As a blonde was driving home, her phone sudden...

2

  Ellie

62

'The Hypochondriac's Pocket Guide to Horrible D... = Oh God, see that waistline: a big, floppy pot...

3

SPECIAL:

With only four entries here this month, there were just two awards, following our prescribed formula (3 or less entries - one award, four entries - two awards, five or more - three awards).

Mey's nomination was, as usual, excellent and took the expected early lead. He won comfortably with Tony picking up 2nd prize quite easily.

Tony had two awards this month. He has been having a very good year and already has 20 awards. His Grand Total is 47.

1

  Mey Kraus

70

Shakespeare's weather-themed sonnet is anagrammed into a series of 4 seasonal sonnets, each with its fitting acrostic.

2

  Tony Crafter

53

THE TIMELESS WIT OF GROUCHO MARX

3

  Rosie Perera

41

Yesterday (by The Beatles)

4

  Andrew

29

The devil went down to Georgia

RUDE:

If you were as good an anagrammer as Mey, you, too, could win six awards. The problem is that the rest of us are not that good.

This was another start-to-finish win for Mey, steadily increasing his lead from 8 points at 12 hours to 26 by the end.

Mey's six awards is just one short of his monthly record. He has had 40 awards this year and a career total of 271.

1

  Mey Kraus

57

Male sexual dysfunction = One climaxes unduly fast!

2

  View

31

A dinner at my expense = Sex earned, in payment.

3

  Paul Pan

25

The Young Men's Christian Association = Homos chance arses in gay institution.

AWARDMASTER'S AWARD FOR THE BEST ANAGRAM OF A NON-WINNING AUTHOR

With five anagrams just off a winning place, I had no trouble deciding who would win this. Rosie Perera! The trouble was which one of the five quality anagrams to pick, so I asked her advice and this is the one that she selected:

Rosie Perera with:
The cartoonist Matt Groening ~
got attention tracing Homer S.

Rosie's win was her third this year and her seventh all-up. She has moved up to 31st on the All-Time Table from 33rd.

Congratulations to all the winners. Thank you all for voting.
