Results - February, 2005

47 voters was a slightly disappointing number this month. I have wondered in recent times if the requirement to use one's email address might be off-putting to new voters. People are suspicious about divulging their email addresses these days for fear that they will end up on a spam list. With the on-line display of your votes, the need for email comfirmation is redundant nowadays.

As a result, we have decided to drop the email address as a required field and will make it optional, to be used only if the voter wants at email confirmation.

The Forum, generally, was a little quieter in February, but has picked up this month again. Welcome to all the new members who have joined us recently.

As has been the case in the last few months, there was a good spread of winners, with 11 members winning a total of 14 awards, again.

GENERAL:

At the 12 hour mark, the eventual winner, Rick, was well clear. During the rest of the comp[etion, he moved further ahead for a solid 27 margin.

While Tony and David were 2nd and 3rd at the end of each day, they were challenged keenly by Mey, Paul and Jesse for the 3rd place award.

Rick's win was his 7th all-up, as was Tony's. Both move up into the top 25 on the All-Time TAble.

This was another start-to-finish winner. Dee4j (Dan Fortier) was a clear favourite, with a 14 point lead after just 12 hours, ballooning out to a massive 41 point win by the end of the event.

Dan has not had a win since 2000, but this now boosts his total to six.

PEOPLES NAMES:

This was somewhat closer that the above categories, but the winner was always in the lead.

Don Rogers joined us very recently and is aleady show good skill. His entry drew praise from Richard and I prior to competition and neither of us were surprised by his win, but I expected that he would do it by a larger margin.

Well done, Don, on your first win

Well, finally a close category!

Richard and Rick led at 12 hours, with palusch, Horrid and Dee4j four points back. Horrid and Richard led at the end of Day One, with Rick, Dee4j and View with three points on the leaders.

Day Two saw Richard still leading, with palusch one point back, followed by Dee4j and View, then Horrid and Rick. The top six were just seven points apart.

The final 24 hours saw much reshuffling of the order, with palusch scraping in first, followed by Richard and Dan. Don Rogers filled 4th place, while Rick, Horrid and View shared 5th place.

palush (Paul Lusch) has now won 3 awards since 1998.

LONG:

The pre-voting favourite with Richard and I was Mey's entry, the longest and one of the funniest in the competition. However, sometimes length can work against you...

The start was close with Dee4j and myself leading by one over Rosie, and Mey way back in 5th. I was ten points clear after 24 hours and was feeling confident. I maintained that lead to the line, with David and Mey finished more strongly that they started.

I was pleasantly surprised to pick my 89th award in what was a low-output month for me.

SPECIAL:

There was never much doubt about who would win here, especially given the absence of Mey from this category this month.

It is a delight to have Mike back among us, with his astounding abilities in this exalted genre of anagramming.

Mike's 47 point win earnt him his 25th award and put him back in the top ten. David's two awards this month raise his total to 67 and a clear fourth place on the All-Time Table. Richard's win here brings him up to 150.

Three wins for Mey this month, elevating him to 192 all-time awards

AWARDMASTER'S AWARD FOR THE BEST ANAGRAM OF A NON-WINNING AUTHOR

There were not very many contenders for this award this month given the large number of award winners, most of whom were well-placed in the runners-up postions. We considered Paul Pan's 5th place in General, View's Entertainment and Peoples Names, Horrid's 5th place in Other Names and Hans-Peter's second place in Rude.

Ultimately, we selected View's Peoples Name third place:

View with:
Chairman Gates = A magnate's rich.
